Teaching
Placement
Although Ghana is an English speaking country,
many school children cannot communicate effectively
in the English language. This is a common phenomenon
in both rural and urban areas of Ghana, hence the
need to recruit and place volunteers in communities
where there are simply insufficient teachers (or
teacher's that have inadequate English) to cater
for the number of children.
The project seeks to stimulate the interest in school
children to study and speak proper English,
whilst at the same time offering foreign volunteers
a unique opportunity to learn and experience Ghanaian culture.
Music, maths and arts are also incorporated into our program.
Volunteers are effectively placed in rural communities
where they will teach solo and assist the few teachers available.
The teaching will be based on the syllabus of the Ghana
Education Service and this will be made available to all
volunteers after orientation.
Volunteers do NOT have to be qualified or experienced in
teaching to take part in this program.
Basic Information
We work with four schools currently, two in the Western region,
one in the Volta region and one in the Eastern region.
The children range from ages 4 to 16 years, covering creche,
Kindergarten 1-2, Primary 1-6 and Junior High School 1-3. This
can vary according to your exact placement, but there is often a
choice for what class you will teach.
The schools are generally understaffed, and even in some places
the teachers will cover as many as three classes. This leads to slow
learning and the development of the children is therefore hindered.
We are now trying to resolve this by placing volunteers who wish
to teach to help relieve local volunteers.
Since working in schools we have noticed the children's
English and other education vastly improve. The positive impact
foreign volunteers leaves is a motivation for us to keep
this program running.
