Worked with the Volunteer Corps for four weeks in the village of Timber Nkwanta. My original intention with the placement was to assist the other volunteers in construction of a school house for the children of the village. Soon after my four weeks in the community began, I found that my love for the children and expereince with teaching was much more valuable than my attempts with cement. So, I spent the majority of my month helping about fifteen children with their English lessons.
At times I led their class and at others, worked with those students that needed a bit of extra help to stay up to speed with their peers. I also invited students to visit me in the evenings to practice their english comprehension and reading skills.
This experience was, with no exaggeration, one of the most important things I have done in my life. I have never met students with such incredible enthusiasm and I have never felt a greater need to help them. Kids who could barely whisper an English greeting at the beginning of my month were soon coming up to me and instigating conversations that baffled me with their knowledge.
But it wasn't only the teaching that made the work as meaningful as it was. It was every child that greeted me when they walked by, the smiles that lit up their faces.
Aside from the work itself, being a volunteer with Volunteer Corps was an expereince I cannot even begin to express the importance of. I never imagined I would be able to live in such a welcoming setting. From the village itself to the friendships I made with the other volunteers to finally figuring out how to properly eat Fufu, my adventure was memorable, fulfilling and, I can't forget to mention, fun.
